About me
Hello! I am a Middle School Crossroads Counselor with Albuquerque Public Schools (APS), specializing in substance use prevention and intervention for youth and families following a substance-related school infraction. Whether the incident involves nicotine, THC/marijuana, alcohol, or illicit substances such as cocaine, I provide a nonjudgmental, supportive approach focused on education, prevention, and positive change. In addition, I support students, staff, and families through substance use prevention education and awareness initiatives. As a Crossroads Counselor, I offer time-limited, confidential support that includes education, resources, and practical strategies to help students reduce or stop substance use, prevent future incidents, and overcome the stigma often associated with seeking help. I hold a Master of Arts in Counseling from the University of Phoenix and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University. My undergraduate degrees in Music Performance and Music Education are from Arizona State University. I have more than 32 years of experience in education and leadership. I have served as a Band Director, Middle School Counselor, Administrator, and District Director. My professional journey came full circle when my husband and I welcomed and adopted two infants who had been severely substance-exposed in utero. This experience renewed my passion for counseling and strengthened my commitment to supporting children, families, and communities affected by substance use. Over the years, I have developed and facilitated trainings and presentations on a variety of critical topics, including substance use prevention and awareness, cyber safety for educators and families, threat assessment and management, instructional design, and classroom management. I have presented nationally at conferences and organizations including College Board, ACTFL, CARLA, ASA, Arizona State University, and the Annual Confucius Institute Conference in China. Locally, I have presented at the University of New Mexico and numerous district events on substance use prevention, health and wellness, cyber safety, and social-emotional learning. I believe that substance use education, prevention, and early intervention must be a regular part of every child's education. Early identification and support can have a profound impact on a young person's physical, emotional, and mental well-being, helping them develop the skills needed to lead healthy, successful lives. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or ideas.
